Abstract

Periodontal disease may cause significant deleterious effects in human dentition including the destruction of the periodontal attachment system and eventually tooth loss. There is also a growing body of scientific evidence that suggests a role for periodontal infections in the deterioration of the systemic health. Therefore, prevention of periodontal disease may have significant effects in public health. Strategies to prevent this disease should consider the role of oral health care products that may be utilized by patients at the individual level. In this sense, the development of new pharmacological products focused on the modulation of periodontal infection and inflammation should be envisaged as an interesting alternative for the prevention of periodontal disease. The present review analyses the role of pharmacological agents, used in dentifrices, that may have a positive effect in the control of gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Key words: Prevention, dentifrice, triclosan, periodontal disease.
